Ford V8 buses
The Ford V8 was first built in 1932. Bus chassis were introduced in 1934 although some buses were built in North
America on earlier truck chassis. Right hand drive chassis were built in Canada and New Zealand models originated from
there. Early models had a wheelbase of 157 inches although some chassis were extended when used for buses. From 1940
the bus chassis had a wheelbase of 194 inches.
Although a few were sold prior to World War II sales increased during the war when Ford V8's were almost the only bus
chassis available. In 1945 when new buses were still very hard to obtain NZ Motor Bodies introduced the Steelbilt metal
bus body for Ford V8's and sales took off. The last sales were in 1952 and from then New Zealand Fords were sourced from
England and the Thames ET7 chassis replaced the V8. Ford V8s were the most numerous buses in New Zealand until sales of
the next NZMB standard design, the Bedford SB surpassed them.
Model numbers on Ford V8s are a bit complicated. According to "Ford Trucks Since 1905" James Wagner, prior to 1938 2
digit model numbers were used in which the first digit was the year of manufacture. In 1938 a 4 character model
identifer was introduced
- The first digit was the year of maunfacture 2=1942 6=1946 etc
- The second digit was engine displacement 9=Mercury 239cu in motor
- The third digit was chassis length 7=157in 4=194in
- The last character was a T
- Right hand drive Canadian buses had an F suffix.
So a 294TF is a 1942 right hand drve 194inch chassis with 239cu in motor. This is an Americn book and New Zealand buses are Canadian and
there is some variation.
Later Canadian designed Ford V8s have models commencing with a C.

Christchurch Tramways Board
Christchurch Tramways Board had New Zealands largest fleet of Ford V8 buses. 42 buses were part of its fleet at
some stage. During the war Ford V8 chassis was all that was available and the scarcity of bus chassis continued for
a few years after the war. Later in life an number were coverted to Bike Buses carrying drivers bicylces between the
Moorhouse Ave depot and Cathedral Square.
The board was renamed in 1952 to Christchurch Transport Board
Normal control bus (model 91T or 99T) with CTB B16F body. This bus was built for J McGregor who operated the Pleasant
Point feeder service by the Christchurch Tramways Board workshops and registered to the board for a few months.
